Following up on my previous post about improvements in SharePoint for End users, I like to share my 5 favorite improvements for IT Pros. For those of you who could not attend SPC12, the full features are outlined on TechNet. I will share my 5 favorite improvements in SharePoint 2013 for Developers in the next post.
This was the best feature improvement in SharePoint 2013 and I couldn’t wait to start using it. Check out the search hands on labs (HOL031 and HOL034) on MySPC while they are available. I was impressed with the new search architecture and how it was integrated into:
- Search query box: Autocomplete with personal refined links is now supported
- Hover preview bar: You can hover over search result items like documents and look inside. The however preview bar will extract the search term and display the exact page where it is!
- Content search web part (CSWP): displays search results in a way that you can easily format
- Search query rules: You can setup rules which bring back personalized queries.
- Web analytics: Improve search results base on views, clicks, usage numbers, etc.
The improvements exceeded my expectations on all levels. There are many more features to cover however; I have listed my 5 favorite. I will dedicate an entire post to search in the future.
2. SkyDrive Pro
If you are familiar with the personal cloud storage services of SkyDrive, you should be excited for SkyDrive Pro. SkyDrive Pro is Microsoft’s business cloud service to store, sync, and share files for SharePoint online. This is great for offline access and management of files from all your devices.
3. Shredded storage
It is a differential method of storing documents where it removes duplication in files and reduces the amount of content getting stored in the database. SharePoint parses the document contents as it is stored in the database and checks for duplicate elements. This method is doing a differential comparison and removing duplicating content in the documents. This will mean resource savings in the SQL, disk, backup etc.
4. Office Web Apps 2013
The browser based suite of products for Microsoft Office setup has change for SharePoint 2013. Office Web Apps in SharePoint 2013 is no longer a service application that is part of your SharePoint farm. Instead it is installed as a separate farm, which provides a number of advantages, such as reuse between multiple SharePoint and Exchange farms, a separate patching schedule, etc. My favorite improvement is being able to preview and manage documents from SkyDrive Pro.
5. Translation service
Users can translate text from one language to another using 2 types of services:
- OOB SharePoint machine-translation service
- 3rd party translation services that are available
This translation service will be very attractive for organizations running international sites in different languages.
